Athens Among Best Cities Worldwide for Hybrid Workers
The 2025 Global Hybrid Work Index, published by International Workplace Group (IWG), has ranked Athens as the 12th best city in the world for blending work and leisure — a notable climb that further cements the Greek capital’s leading role in Europe’s flexible work landscape.
The annual report evaluates 40 cities worldwide based on climate, internet speed, coworking space availability, cultural experiences, and digital nomad visa policies to identify the best destinations for remote and hybrid workers.
Why Athens Is Rising as a Hybrid Work Hotspot
In this year’s rankings, Athens stood out for its upgraded digital infrastructure, vibrant lifestyle, and Greece’s growing appeal to international remote workers.
- Climate & Affordability – With its year-round Mediterranean climate, relatively low living costs, and the perfect mix of city convenience and natural beauty, Athens is ideal for digital nomads and professionals looking to extend their workations.
- Strong Infrastructure – A thriving ecosystem of coworking hubs and innovation spaces, backed by a stable and continuously improving broadband network, supports flexible work.
- Cultural & Geographic Advantages – The city offers a wealth of historical landmarks, culinary experiences, and cultural heritage, plus easy access to Greek islands, beaches, and national parks.
- Policy Support – Greece’s digital nomad visa program continues to attract foreign remote workers seeking long-term stays.
The “Workation” Trend Is Here to Stay

IWG data shows that 60% of hybrid workers prefer to extend vacations through remote work, while 86% say the availability of flexible workspaces influences their choice of destination.
These findings align with the Hybrid Work Productivity Report, jointly published by IWG and Arup, which predicts that flexible work models could boost productivity by 11% over the next five years — creating a win-win for both employers and employees.
As global workforce mobility grows, cities that balance infrastructure, lifestyle, accessibility, and cost will become the most attractive. Athens’ strong performance this year signals its transformation from a historic tourist hotspot into a modern hub where work and lifestyle converge.
