Athens’ Neos Kosmos Named World’s 3rd-Coolest Neighborhood by Time Out

Neos Kosmos in Athens has been named one of the world’s third-coolest neighborhood in Time Out’s newly published ranking of 40 neighborhoods for 2026.

The Athens district placed behind only Jongno 3-ga in Seoul and L’Ocean in Rabat, after being overshadowed for years by better-known neighboring areas such as Koukaki and Pangrati.

The ranking, released on September 16, was compiled by Time Out’s global network of local contributors and vetted by its editors against criteria including food and drink, nightlife, local businesses, livability and community.

Located between the Acropolis and the Athens Riviera, Neos Kosmos has developed into one of the capital’s emerging neighborhoods while retaining its local character, according to Time Out. The area is attracting young creatives and independent businesses alongside its established mix of families, immigrants, students and artists.

The magazine highlighted Onassis Stegi as an important part of the neighborhood’s cultural identity, pointing to its role in showcasing contemporary Greek creativity internationally through exhibitions, performances and public events. Traditional tavernas also sit alongside newer restaurants, cafes, bars and neighborhood bakeries throughout the area.

Time Out’s recommended day in Neos Kosmos includes breakfast at Naif and coffee at Lalos, with stops at old-school bakeries Vlachos and Mountrichas on Baknana Street. For lunch, it suggests Lostre Kuzina or Armenian grill Mortis, followed by a visit to Onassis Stegi.

For the evening, the guide recommends dinner at rooftop restaurant Amphibian and drinks at Epta Martyres, Bar Amore or Teras.

Autumn and spring were highlighted as the best seasons to visit, while the annual Neos Kosmos Block Party, typically held in early October, was singled out as a neighborhood fixture.

The World’s Coolest Neighborhoods 2026 – Top 10
Topping Time Out’s 2026 list is Jongno 3-ga in Seoul, followed by L’Ocean in Rabat and Neos Kosmos in Athens in third place.

Rounding out the top 10 are Chinatown in Los Angeles, Govanhill in Glasgow, Kitakagaya in Osaka, Chapinero Alto in Bogota, Koenji in Tokyo, Downtown St. Catharines in Canada and Esquilino in Rome.
